Academy Award nominated for best international film and winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, Nadine Labaki’s Capernaum (“Chaos”) tells the story of twelve-year old Zain, a Lebanese boy who sues his parents for the “crime” of having given him life and subsequently neglecting him. The film follows the courageous, streetwise Zain as he flees his delinquent parents, survives by his wits on the streets, takes care of Ethiopian refugee Rahil and her baby son, Yonas, goes to jail for stabbing someone and finally, seeks justice in a courtroom. Capernaum was made with a cast of non-professionals playing characters whose lives closely parallel their own, and was a surprise global hit becoming the highest grossing Arabic film of all time.
